Who We are
The Grand Rapids Buddhist Temple and Zen Center is an American temple. We emphasize the interdependence and interbeing of all things, the emptiness of all phenomena, the inherent Buddha nature in all beings, and the bodhisattva aspiration. Additionally, we stress inclusiveness and a living experience of the Buddha-Dharma. We strive to bring the Buddha Dharma to the everyday lives of the Sangha. Our Sangha is primarily made up of folks who have full time jobs and families so we emphasize practical applications of the Buddha’s teaching. We offer a full array of basic and advanced classes, regular meditation periods, and special services. We also are a social group and meet frequently as a community for potlucks and discussions. We strive to have a warm and welcoming temple where everyone is welcome regardless of spiritual tradition or life style choice. Children are always welcome to our services and we provide children’s activities during our Sunday services September - May. For more information please feel free to contact the Administrative Abbot, Ahm Koh David Beighley at firstname.lastname@example.org or 616 437 2310.
The Grand Rapids Buddhist Temple and Zen Center’s inclusive practice centers on meditation, chanting, scripture study, inter-faith dialogue, and community service. We place a high level of importance on the study of the Buddhist scriptures as well as those of various Zen Masters.
In our tradition the congregation is called “Sangha,” which means a community of monks, teachers, and lay people who come together to share a life under the guidance of the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, the patriarchs, and other holy men and women. We are open to everyone and anyone who seeks spiritual development and practice in a Zen Buddhist context.
Our Organization and Staff:
The Grand Rapids Buddhist Temple and Zen Center is under the leadership of our clergy team who are responsible to our board of directors. We operate on a donation basis only in keeping with our practice of generosity (dana). We hope that every person who participates with us will find it of value and will support our efforts by sharing their time as well as making a donation. No one is turned away from any of our activities for financial reasons.
